Sukanya is Ravi Shankar's only opera. He began writing it at the age of 90 and it was left incomplete at the time of his death in 2012. It was painstakingly completed and orchestrated by David Murphy, a long-time collaborator of Shankar's, with the help of Shankar's wife Sukanya and daughter Anoushka. A musical love letter to by Shankar's wife, the opera is based on a tale from the Mahabharata. It seamlessly blends Western and Indian musical traditions to tell an epic and magical love story that spans time and space. This world premiere recording, taken from a live performance at the Royal Festival Hall, features David Murphy leading the London Philharmonic Orchestra and a stellar cast of soloists.
