詳細

It was set to be a intriguing amalgam. Possibly explosive, but a worst case scenario of some over expectant damp squib. Once the word got out that Soundgarden main man Chris Cornell had teamed up with three quarters of Rage Against The Machine, and that they were recording an album with Red Hot Chili Peppers producer Rick Rubin, the results were always going to be something to look forward to. But was this a new supergroup, or just a bunch of leftovers looking for a main course?

Cornell's unmistakable voice rules the roost throughout. More screams per minute guaranteed than a stack of Eddy Vedder out-takes. They hit you right off from the 'Cochise'first track, and are there all the way to 'The Last Remaining Light'suitably enough at the end. How the poor dear manages to maintain that strength through 14 tracks without singing himself horse is anyone's guess. The guitars are only slightly less throaty. Thumping, dynamic, dynamite.

However there are a few tracks of respite. 'Like A Stone' is more subdued, but still in keeping. 'I Am The Highway' probably the most restrained, yet with a particularly strong melody. Oh yes, there are tunes here, not just decibels. 'Shadow On The Sun' follows the same course 'until the Cornell foghorn cranks up that extra notch.

But Audioslave is more than just a hybrid of two bands. Yes there are echoes of each former incarnation 'plus an occasional, particularly spooky flash of Nirvana - but the sum is more than those parts. Although some purists may weep, there should be enough past essence of RATM and Soundgarden to pacify fans in both camps, but with additional rawk to attract new addicts.

This album is definitely not for the feint of heart, and the sound barrier is shattered innumerable times, but it is the real deal. If you are expecting easy listening, then forget it. It does improves on each play too. You may be thwacked by volume on first listen, but stick with it and the intricacies come out over time.

There have been a lot of top rocking-nu-metal-pop-punk albums in the last few months, and this is a prime time if you like more thrash for your bash. If recent goodies from the Queens Of The Stone Age, Foo Fighters, System Of A Down, Sum 41 and the yet to be big Good Charlotte tickled your fancy, then this one is also one to add to your rocking Santa list. Oh, and include some throat lozenges too 'I feel some sympathetic laryngitis coming on just listing to Audioslave.
